Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry in Atlanta, GA

Each year, fear of the dentist keeps millions of people out of the office. This is a major issue, because forgoing regular professional dental cleanings can seriously impact a person’s dental health. Furthermore, studies have shown that parents may pass their dental anxiety on to their children, creating generations of poor oral health in one family. Luckily, there are now many ways for people to have a more calm and relaxing experience at the dentist’s office and ease their fears thanks to sedation dentistry.

There are three main types of sedation dentistry – IV sedation, N2O sedation and oral conscious sedation.

When a patient chooses oral conscious sedation our Atlanta dentists will give him or her a mild narcotic in the form of either a pill or a liquid. This narcotic will absorb quickly into the patient’s bloodstream and allow them to feel calm during the dental procedure, while remaining conscious so they can still respond to requests from the dentist. While some people may be afraid of the dentist, the idea of having to undergo anesthesia for a simple dental procedure can also be frustrating, which is why it’s important for there to be options that leave people calm but still conscious.

These narcotics have a short-term effect, so patients will be back to feeling normal in no time. However, it’s important to note that following a dental procedure, a patient may still feel some of the effects of these pills. This is why all patients who choose oral sedation dentistry need to have an escort with them when they leave the office. Patients will not be able to drive or drink alcohol for a designated period of time after taking these pills, and should have an escort even if they are walking home, since they may be disoriented. However, patients shouldn’t be worried, because the effects of the narcotics will wear off in a short period of time and they will be feeling the same as they did before they entered the office, except without the dental anxiety.

There’s no reason for people to let dental anxiety keep them from getting the care they need when they can simply take a pill and feel calm and relaxed throughout the procedure. Oral sedation dentistry is available to help people overcome their dental fear, and our Atlanta dentists can offer it to any patients who are anxious.
