Sedation is a necessary step in a variety of dental procedures, ranging from tooth extraction to advanced root canals, but some patients may require sedation dentistry to make it through a standard dental appointment. For many patients, a trip to the dentist’s office isn’t all sunshine and roses, and many of these individuals experience extreme anxiety when heading in for a consultation. As a result, our dentists in Atlanta have found that sedation dentistry is a fantastic option to calm and relax a patient prior to a dental appointment to ensure that these individuals do not experience needless stress and can make it through teeth cleanings and other procedures without issue.

For many patients, the idea of being awake for strenuous procedures like cavity fillings and root canals is less than desirable, so sedation, or sleep, dentistry could be required. After mild sedatives have been applied, the patient can still remain conscious, aware and can respond to instructions from the dentist, but will be far more comfortable and will have a decreased chance of experiencing stress or anxiety.

Patients have a wealth of options available to them when considering sedation dentistry. One of the most common is inhalation dental sedation, which is typically used in tandem with nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. This mild form of sedation leaves very few lingering side effects and patients can typically head home without the need of an escort. With more advanced procedures, oral conscious sedation dentistry is administered with a wide variety of oral sedatives that are administered before the visit.

Last but not least, for those who wish to combine a variety of intensive procedures into one visit, IV conscious sedation dentistry using an IV applied by an anesthesiologist is the best choice. During this state, patients may go back and forth between a conscious and unconscious state, and hours can start to feel like minutes. This method does have lasting side effects and patients will need an escort to return home, but it may be the best choice for those who suffer from significant dental anxiety or those planning a variety of treatments in one visit.
